Combining finite element computations with k.p modeling, we have described how acoustic waves in phononic waveguide structures couple to excitons in quantum dots. In addition to deformation potential coupling to volumetric strain, we have discovered the strain impact via valence-band deformation potentials and piezoelectric fields via both built-in and induced dipoles. Some of these couplings have non-linear characteristics, leading to frequency doubling in the QD response.
